Scrub Jay

(Aphelocoma coerulescens)

The Scrub Jay, not to be confused with the Steller's Jay which lives in the local mountains, can commonly be seen around the lodge area. This bird is quite brazen and has been known to snatch peanuts from a person's hand. Normally they will feed on small animals, eggs, insects, seeds, and berries. They can store a number of seeds in their throats while they find a place to bury them for later retrieval. Being a member of the Corvid family, they are related to crows.
