Sanderling

(Calidris alba)

During the winter months, the Sanderling is a common sight around the lagoon and beaches of Torrey Pines State Reserve. They are often hard to identify because of the variations in plumage between the adults and juveniles and between winter and summer months. They tend to congregate in small groups, following within inches the surfline as it moves in and out.
