Common Raven

(Corvus corax)

The genus name, Corvus, is Latin for "crow" while the species name, corax, is Greek for "raven" - so this is "crow raven". The Common Raven is a member of the Corvidae family which includes our Western Scrub-Jay and its smaller kin the American Crow. Having a wingspan of 4 1/2 feet and weighing up to 3 pounds, it is easy to see why it is the largest of the all black birds in the world. It has shaggy throat feathers and a wedge-shaped tail which distinguishes it from the American Crow which has a squared-off tail. It is a year-round resident of the Torrey Pines area and feeds on carrion, small animals, and seeds. Like other birds, the Raven will store its food under rocks and in holes and has a bad habit of regurgitating undigested food as pellets.
